W H Grindley & Co, 1891 - 1914, "Flow Blue" Egg Shaped Bone Dish
The backstamp & motif is circular with what looks like a pineapple in middle. This particular backstamp is blurred-which occurred during the firing process. The pineapple is actually a steamship sailing over a globe. It is indicative of W H Grindley & Co of Staffordshire, England. The "Flow" Effect is a distinctive look created by adding volatile chemicals-such as lime or ammonia to the kiln during firing which causes the cobalt blue transferware glaze to intentionally blur and bleed into the white porcelain or ceramic background. There is also a "H" imprinted into the back of the piece. This is the Potter's ID. Workers were paid per piece and a stamped initial or number id'd the specific artisan. This was imprinted prior to firing. This was also used as a quality assurance tool. The egg shaped bone dish seems difficult to find. I found only 1 sold comp in this shape. It seems the kidney shape is easier to find. It is in good antique condition. However, the gold gild around the scalloped edges is wore almost completely off. There is intricate embossing of a filigree like pattern below the rim of the dish. There are no chips or cracks. There is no crazing or scratching. A 3 tiny "divets" in a triangular pattern on back that occurred during firing, probably from sitting on a stand. It measures approx 5 1/2" x 7 1/2", 9 Oz.
