The name "Teme" is derived from a word in the Pueblo of Acoma meaning "he who makes jewelry."The company operated by partnering directly with talented Native American silversmiths and lapidary artists from the Navajo (Diné), Zuni, and Hopi tribes. Notable individual artisans like Jonathan McKinney (Acoma) fabricated pieces specifically for the Teme brand. In 2007, the company's legacy was preserved when it was officially acquired by the Navajo Arts & Crafts Enterprise.
