Vintage Beswick Beatrix Potter Jeremy Fisher Porcelain Frog Character Jug RARE
This rare 'Jeremy Fisher' vintage porcelain character jug is from renowned British Pottery, Beswick. Beswick was founded in 1892 and is primarily known for producing high quality porcelain animal figurines, including those characters introduced by author Beatrix Potter. Beswick was sold to Royal Doulton in 1969, and Doulton ceased using the Beswick backstamp in 1989. This piece is based on Potter's story, "The Tale of Jeremy Fisher". Beatrix Potter's popular children's story features the frog Jeremy Fisher, and was published in 1906. The story tells the tale of how Jeremy sets out to catch a brace of fish in hopes of hosting a small dinner party for his friends. Jeremy has a tough time of it, piercing his hand on a stickleback fish and narrowly escaping being eaten by a large trout. Poor Jeremy has little to offer his dinner guests and they make do with a roasted grasshopper. This appealing porcelain character jug is highly detailed and features Jeremy Fisher's upper torso and head along with an orange and green bobber. The handle of the jug is made up of the body of the trout who tried to make a meal of Jeremy. The piece has a lovely pastel color palette made up of Jeremy's butter yellow head and pink coat, while the fish is depicted in shades of light blue and green. This hard to find Jeremy Fisher Beswick character jug was only produced for a short time and is in excellent condition. The piece stands 2.5" tall and measures 2.5" deep and 3.25" across at its widest point. The jug is free of chips, cracks, crazing and repairs and is marked with the BP4 brown backstamp on its glazed foot. The backstamp features the Beswick script signature and reads "John Beswick" "ENGLAND - BEATRIX POTTER - "Jeremy Fisher" - © 1987 Frederick Warne & Co. - Licensed by Copyrights".
