Stamped-Antique Nippon Moriage Porcelain Sugar Shaker, Hand Painted, Bold Gold Gilt EVERYWHERE, Handle w/ Cork
Nippon was stamped Japan from 1891 -1921. Nippon is the literal Japanese name for Japan & their products were exported to Western markets, particularly the US. McKineley Tariff Act passed in 1890 and this US law mandated all imported goods be clearly stamped w/ their country of origin in legible English. Japan complied by backstamping its export pottery w/ "Nippon" starting in 1891. In 1921, US customs officials ruled that "Nippon" was a Japanese word, not an English one. They banned its use, requiring imports to be marked "Japan" or "Made in Japan instead. Japanese artisans were trained to mimic elite European styles like Limoges and Belleek. Authentic pieces are famous for elaborate hand-painting, heavy gold gilding, and Moriage-that creates a 3D effect. Genuine antique Nippon porcelain is noted for its high-quality glaze and lightweight, translucent feel. . The Shaker features hand painted roses framed with gold beading and raised gold designs, known as moriage, over a beige body. The sugar shaker is quite ornate. In addition the body of the shaker is a beautiful ribbed pattern, with a delicate gold gilt handle. Several holes on the top w/ gold gilt embellishments. The cork is intact, but may be difficult to remove as it is firmly even and within the hole in the bottom of the shaker. It is stamped Hand Painted, and there is a logo also stamped on the bottom. These are very collectible. This is in excellent antique condition with very minimal paint wear-if any. AND no crazing. It measures approx 4 3/4" H, 2" diameter at top, 3 1/2" diameter at base, Rim to end of handle approx 4", 7 Oz
