Antique Silver Plated Open Salt Cellar w/ a Thick Cobalt Blue Glass Removable Liner
There is a goldish patina that is a result of the salt that was contained within the glass liner was highly corrosive and would ruin or pit the raw metal container over time. The exterior frame is crafted from metal featuring a pedestal footed base. The metal does have a warm, yellowish oxidation pattern visible on its surface. The metal is most likely Silver Plated brass or copper experiencing heavy tarnishing. The reason for salt cellars? Before the 20th century and the introduction of anti-caking agents-salt clumped easily. Thus, salt cellars and NOT salt shakers....This has a makers mark etched on the bottom indicating it is a Weidlich Brothers Manufacturing Company Product. They produced decorative Art Nouveau & Victorian revival table pieces from 1901 until the 1950's. It measures approx 1 1/2"H, 2 1/4" diameter, 6 Oz.
