#4124 Antique Continental basalt and brass basketweave decorative box.

Decorative boxes, particularly snuff boxes, were highly prized accessories during the 18th and 19th centuries, serving as both functional items for carrying tobacco and as displays of wealth and status. Materials ranged from precious metals and ivory to porcelain and carved wood, often adorned with intricate designs, miniatures, or enamel work. The basketweave motif was a popular decorative element, lending a tactile and visually appealing texture to these small treasures. Continental Europe, especially France and England, was a major center for the production of fine boxes. Styles evolved with the prevailing artistic movements, from the Rococo and Neoclassical periods to the Victorian era. Items like this basalt and brass box, possibly influenced by Wedgwood's popular basalt ware, would have been crafted by skilled artisans, reflecting the era's taste for both classical forms and innovative material use. 2.5” no chips or cracks
