Independent studio glass artists and commercial art glass factories in France crafted iridescent paperweights using traditional glassblowing techniques. Craftsmen achieved the metallic sheen by spraying hot glass with metallic salts while it was still on the blowpipe, creating a permanent luminous surface layer.

Desk workers, writers, and collectors used these heavy glass objects on writing desks and office tables to prevent drafts from scattering important documents. Their popularity grew as decorative arts shifted towards colorful, tactile desk ornaments that combined function with artisanal skill. Over time, the rise of digital communication and modern office practices gradually reduced the daily need for paperweights on working desks.
