Independent studio glass artists in the United States crafted pieces like this one by hand during the late twentieth century. They were made to display advanced glassblowing techniques and decorative internal patterns rather than for everyday office use. Makers achieved these intricate designs by gathering molten glass over colored glass threads and metallic foils before shaping the hot mass in a furnace.

Desk workers and interior decorators used them as decorative objects on tables, shelves, and office desks. They were displayed where sunlight could pass through the clear outer layer to highlight the suspended colors and air bubbles inside. Production of such studio pieces eventually slowed down as changing interior design trends reduced the demand for traditional art glass paperweights.
