Caithness Glass was founded in Scotland in 1961 by Robin Henderson, starting out in Wick before establishing its main studio in Perth. The company became internationally famous for producing decorative art glass paperweights, particularly known for pioneering modern studio techniques using controlled air bubbles. Designers like Colin Terris and Innes Burns created hundreds of distinct models, combining abstract internal shapes with vibrant coloured glass.

Paperweights of this kind were used on desks and tables to hold down loose letters and papers in homes and offices. They were made by gathering molten glass on a metal pipe, shaping the coloured core and air bubbles inside, and then encasing the whole piece in a thick layer of clear crystal. Over the decades, these decorative items evolved from functional office accessories into collectable works of art prized for their intricate glassblowing techniques.
