~~ ADDITIONAL INFO ~~
Birdseye maple is not a distinct species but a rare grain figure found primarily in Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum), occurring in less than 1/10th of 1% of trees.
The exact cause remains unknown, though it is widely attributed to stressful growing conditions, such as poor soil or high stem density, which cause aborted buds to leave small "eyes" in the wood.
Historically, Birdseye maple was considered a defect or flaw, often chipped into firewood because its divergent grain caused tear-out in early woodworking tools. It was unsuitable for industrial applications like textile spools or coat hangers, as the torn grain would catch threads.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the wood was used by master cabinetmakers for fine furniture and musical instruments, requiring extensive hand planing to achieve a high sheen.
The invention of special angled cutterheads and sandpaper later allowed for safer machining, leading to its use in flooring and increased popularity.
Today, it is prized for high-end furniture, cabinetry, and veneer, with significant historical sources coming from the Northeastern United States and Canada.
