She took her African name—meaning "she who walks like a lion" —to help fight "a war of cultural and esthetic aggression." Among her award-winning works are For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide, When the Rainbow Is Enuf (1975), Sassafrass (1976), Nappy Edges (1978), and Liliane 1994).
