#2027 vintage Occupied Japan ceramic kangaroo and joey nesting salt and pepper shaker set.
5” tall no chips or cracks. During the post-World War II reconstruction era, Occupied Japan became a prolific exporter of novelty ceramics to Western markets. Japanese factories mastered the art of slip-casting and hand-painting whimsical kitchenware, often featuring cute animals designed to appeal to homemakers. These nesting salt and pepper shakers, where a smaller joey fits snugly into the mother kangaroo's pouch, were immensely popular novelties.
Such functional figurines represented an affordable way to add charm and humor to mid-century dining tables across North America. The distinctive brown and tan airbrushed glazes were characteristic of the ceramic techniques employed in Seto and other Japanese pottery centers during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Today, these surviving table accessories are cherished by collectors of vintage kitchenalia and Occupied Japan ceramics.
