Vintage Agnew Signed Anne of Brittany Queen of France Emblem Crowned Ermine Brooch 1”
This brooch features the crowned ermine emblem of the Queen of France, Duchess Anne of Brittany. It measures approximately 1” long and is signed Agnew on the underside. It has an antique silvertone finish and may have had a gold plating originally as evidenced by remnants of goldplate finish to underside.
The Legend of the Ermine
- The muddy trap: A popular legend says Anne of Brittany saw hunters chasing a white ermine.
- Choice of death: The animal chose to face the hunters and die rather than run through a dirty mud puddle and soil its white coat.
- The motto: This act of courage inspired her famous Latin motto, "Potius mori quam foedari" ("Rather die than dishonor" or "Death rather than dishonor").
