RARE English Black Glass Barnacle Encrusted Vase c1780
Approx 9” tall no chips or cracks good condition. Barnacles on a bottle indicate that it has spent a significant amount of time submerged in water, likely the sea. This submersion can add to the bottle's unique character and appeal to collectors, as it tells a story of maritime history and the bottle's journey through the ocean. The presence of marine growth like barnacles can also provide clues about the bottle's age and the environment in which it was found. Square gin bottles, often referred to as case gin bottles, were commonly used in the 18th and 19th centuries for transporting gin, particularly by Dutch and English merchants. The square shape allowed for efficient packing and storage on ships, minimizing wasted space. These bottles were typically made of dark green or black glass to protect the contents from light exposure, which could degrade the gin over long voyages.
