Handmade Stacey Stanhope Dundon Pottery Decorative Lidded Dish w Horse & Rooster

Absolutely stunning piece of pottery. The images on outside are detailed- chicken, galloping horse, and tree branches and leaves extend around pot and over the lid. HTF piece! Artist makes functional hand thrown pieces that are first thrown on a potters wheel, then decorated with wax. A black slip is painted on the surface causing the wax to stick to the raw clay, but not the wax revealing the images. Pottery is then fired in a salt kiln at temps up to 2300 degrees. As the wax burns off, salt is introduced into the kiln which reacts to the silica in the clay causing a distinctive "salt-fired" sheen. *information from the Gandee Gallery in VT. Beautiful!
