Art Deco Skyscraper Style Electric Shelf Clock HAMMOND “Gregory" 1930's Vintage
Here we go with this extensive description including a story on finding this clock at an estate sale and bringing it back to life. Attended a recent local estate sale where I found this clock hidden on the floor behind a number of other items. Asked if I could plug it in to determine if it still worked-it did not. Still purchased it at their price simply due to its Art Deco design along with the bakelite body. Upon returning to the studio I did research on the repair of the clock. The research suggested that there was probably nothing wrong with the clock it was the way to start the clock working that was the problem. I call it "kick starting" the clock perhaps similar to hand cranking a Model T back in the day. Research revealed one of the knobs on the back side had to be spun first and released in the same motion. Took a few times to master the start up procedure and now works just fine. If purchased it does work it is just tricky to get started.
Condition is used with no cracks or breaks to the bakelite body, though due to its age the finish has dulled down with tarnish, stains, etc. The cord is getting slightly brittle due to being the age it is and perhaps breaking down simply due to the way it was manufactured originally.
This electric clock in an Art Deco style by Hammond, crafted in the United States circa 1930, has the skyscraper style that defines the bold, geometric design of the era. With its form and functionality, this clock combines cutting-edge technology of its time with the sleek, architectural aesthetic inspired by the expansion of skyscrapers of major cities like New York and Chicago during the 1920s and 1930s. The case is made of bakelite, an innovative material popular in the Art Deco period for its versatility and glossy finish, lending the clock both durability and aesthetic appeal. Its clean, angular lines and tiered design echo the verticality and grandeur of skyscrapers, encapsulating a modernist ethos rooted in optimism and progress. The clock tells time and also features day and date functions, making it a rarity among period pieces and a marvel of functional design. The dial itself exhibits Art Deco typography and detailing, set behind a crystal face plus the combination of warm bakelite tones along with polished chrome accents reinforces the luxurious yet industrial feel characteristic of the period. Manufactured by the Hammond Clock Company, known for innovative electric timekeeping mechanisms in the early 20th century, this clock represents the intersection of design and technology during the height of the Art Deco movement. Whether displayed on a desk, mantle, or shelf, this electric clock serves as a striking example of Art Deco artistry and engineering.
Thank you for indulging me with this extensive description and hopefully considering purchase of this clock.
