Antique beaded wristlet purse with a floral rose design.1920’s GERMANY
Minor bead loss along strap edge. Beaded bags, particularly wristlets and small purses, experienced a surge in popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, coinciding with the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. These accessories were often handcrafted, showcasing intricate beadwork using glass, seed beads, and sometimes precious stones. They served as both functional items for carrying essentials and as decorative statements of fashion and status. The designs frequently featured floral motifs, geometric patterns, and elaborate scenes, reflecting the artistic trends of their time. The craftsmanship involved in creating these pieces was highly skilled, often employing techniques like netting, tambour beading, and appliqué. Many of these bags were produced in Europe, particularly in France and Germany, and were highly sought after by women of means.
