#2307 A vintage heavy Cobalt Blue art glass heart-shaped dish.
5 x 4” No chips or cracks - some minor scuffs on base from surface wear is possible
Skilled glass artisans working on the island of Murano in Venice, Italy, alongside various European glassworks, created heavy decorative art glass objects during the middle of the twentieth century. These pieces were crafted to serve as stylish household accessories or ash receptacles during an era when smoking was a ubiquitous social habit in homes and public spaces. Makers used manual forming techniques, pouring molten glass into molds or manipulating it by hand while hot, which resulted in thick walls and distinct organic contours.
Households used these heavy glass dishes on coffee tables, desks, and sideboards to hold ash, matches, or small trinkets like keys and coins. They were produced in vibrant and earthy tones, reflecting the interior design palettes popular from the nineteen-fifties through the nineteen-seventies. As smoking rates declined and interior decor styles shifted toward minimalism, the widespread daily use of decorative ashtrays gradually ceased, leaving them to be appreciated purely as decorative collectibles.
