#2002 A vintage ceramic bluebird salt and pepper shaker set on a branch base.

Good condition with wear. 4.5” x 5” Potters in Japan and the United States made novelty ceramic tableware like these bird shakers in large quantities during the mid-twentieth century. They were produced to add a cheerful, decorative touch to everyday dining tables during an era when themed kitchen accessories were highly popular. Workers cast liquid clay in moulds, fired the pieces in kilns, and then hand-painted the bright blue glazes and facial features before a final glaze firing.

Families used these shakers in dining rooms and kitchens to dispense salt and pepper during family meals and gatherings. They were typically filled from a rubber stopper underneath and placed on the table alongside matching butter dishes and spoon holders. Over time, as dining styles shifted toward casual kitchenware and matching sets were broken or lost, many of these charming novelties ended up in collections.
