WATER SERPENT Clay Bowl VTG (1930s) Signed Rose (Gonzales) Carved Redware Pottery No Chips, Cracks, Or Crazing Pre-owned, Good Condition 2.5”x5.5”
Artist Rose Gonzales (1900-1989) Signed redware clay bowl done in low relief carving that maker referred to as “cameo” style. Design is of an Awanyu, a water serpent that protected the Pueblos of New Mexico. In 1920 Rose learned pottery making from her mother-in-law in the Ildefonso Pueblo of New Mexico using black clay. She started using the carved designs in the 1930s. Based on the traditions of her home Pueblo, Ohkay Owingeh, she used redware. She won many awards for her work.
