#5111 Celadon vase with applied turtle figures and crackle glaze 4.5” x 5
Intentional crackle Finish No chips or cracks Celadon pottery, known for its distinctive jade-green glaze, originated in China during the Song Dynasty and was later perfected in Korea during the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392). The crackle pattern, often seen in celadon, is a result of the glaze cooling at a different rate than the clay body during firing, creating fine lines that are considered a desirable aesthetic feature. These pieces were often used for imperial court use, Buddhist rituals, and as burial goods. Korean Goryeo celadon is particularly renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship, elegant forms, and the development of inlaid (sanggam) and incised decoration techniques. The application of three-dimensional motifs, such as the turtles seen on this vase, was also a feature of Goryeo celadon, adding a lively and decorative element. These vases were highly prized for their beauty and were exported throughout East Asia.
