#0089 An iridescent studio art glass egg paperweight with internal heart motifs.

3” x 1.75” Good condition Unsigned 1980-1990

Independent studio glass artists in America created pieces like this egg starting in the 1960s and 1970s, moving away from large factories to work in small workshops. They made these decorative objects by gathering molten glass on a blowpipe, rolling it through powdered metals and coloured glass threads to form patterns inside. Special chemical fumes were then sprayed onto the hot surface to create a shimmering, rainbow-like sheen before the glass cooled slowly in a special oven.

People placed these decorative paperweights on desks and tables in homes and offices to hold down loose papers and letters. They were given as gifts for birthdays and holidays, displayed on wooden stands or near windows where sunlight would catch the internal colours. Over time, as mass-produced novelties became common, the handmade studio glass movement shifted toward gallery art, but these small functional sculptures remained popular keepsakes.
