#0083 An Isle of Wight art glass paperweight with gold foil inclusions Label 3” x 1.75”
No chips or cracks
Studio glass artists in Britain and across Europe created decorative paperweights using molten glass shaped into rounded domes. These pieces were crafted during the studio glass movement of the mid-to-late twentieth century to showcase the versatility of coloured glass and metallic inclusions. Artisans applied layers of coloured glass and metal foils before casing the entire piece in a thick layer of clear crystal.
People placed these decorative objects on desks and tables to hold down loose papers and letters in homes and offices. Their use gradually shifted from functional stationery accessories to collectible art objects displayed primarily for their aesthetic appeal in cabinets. Production methods relied heavily on traditional glassblowing techniques, requiring precise temperature control and skilled hand manipulation to achieve unique internal patterns.
