#0063 A vintage studio art glass paperweight enclosing three pink flowers.
Independent studio glass artists in America created delicate floral paperweights by working molten crystal over intricately shaped colored glass canes. Craftsmen used a high-temperature torch to melt and manipulate tiny rods of colored glass into petals, leaves, and stamens before encasing them in a thick layer of clear glass. This technique required precise temperature control to prevent the delicate internal flowers from distorting while molten glass was gathered around them.
People placed these decorative objects on desks and tables to hold down loose letters and papers in rooms with open windows. As central heating made paperweights less necessary for practical office use, they transitioned into purely decorative display items collected for their fine craftsmanship. Production eventually slowed as many independent glassblowers retired, making vintage artisan paperweights popular finds for home decor.
