#0064 A handcrafted studio art glass paperweight with pink and white internal swirls.
Independent studio glass artists and small furnace workshops crafted decorative paperweights using traditional molten glass techniques. These pieces were made to showcase optical clarity, colour manipulation, and intricate internal designs achieved through layering hot glass. Molten glass was gathered on a blowpipe, rolled over coloured powders, frits, or glass canes, and then encased in a thick clear dome of glass.
People placed these heavy glass spheres on desks to hold down loose papers or displayed them on shelves simply for their ornamental beauty. The tradition of art glass paperweights evolved from 19th-century factory production into an expressive contemporary craft where each piece remained entirely unique. Production of such decorative items continued as makers experimented with reactive metals, gas bubbles, and complex internal swirls to create distinct visual effects.
