#0060 A mid-century Murano glass paperweight with pink lampwork flowers 1960-70
Glass artisans on the island of Murano, near Venice in Italy, created decorative paperweights using traditional lampwork techniques handed down through generations. These pieces were made throughout the twentieth century to serve both as functional desk accessories and as vibrant decorative objects for the home. Workers shaped molten glass by hand at the furnace, carefully embedding delicate glass flowers and stems into a clear dome to magnify the intricate details within.
People placed these colourful weights on desks and tables to hold down loose papers, letters, and bills in homes and offices. They were widely bought as souvenirs by travellers visiting Venice or given as gifts for special occasions. Over time, mass production and changing interior tastes shifted their popularity, turning them from common desktop tools into treasured display pieces.
