#0022 A Scottish art glass paperweight with internal pink and green swirls by Tweedsmuir Glass On Pedestal Base
2.5” x 2” Original label Good condition
Independent glass studios in Scotland, notably Tweedsmuir Glass in the Scottish Borders, produced decorative paperweights starting in the late twentieth century. These pieces were crafted by skilled artisans to serve as both decorative desk objects and collectable art glass, often sold to tourists and enthusiasts. The glassblowers melted silica sands and metallic oxides together in high-temperature furnaces, gathering the molten material on a blowpipe and manipulating it with hand tools to suspend coloured powders and swirls within a clear dome.
People placed these paperweights on wooden desks and writing tables to hold down loose papers and letters in drafty rooms. They were kept within sight in studies, offices, and living rooms where the smooth, polished crystal caught the light through the windows. Over time, as central heating became common and paper correspondence declined, these functional desk accessories transitioned entirely into decorative display objects collected for their craftsmanship.
