#0006 A Large clear glass apple paperweight with controlled bubbles and a green stem 5”
Good condition
Glassblowers on the Venetian island of Murano in Italy have shaped decorative fruit and paperweights for generations using traditional hand-tooling methods. Master artisans created these pieces to showcase their skill with controlled bubble effects, known as bullicante, combined with applied coloured glass details. Craftsmen gathered molten glass on a blowpipe, introduced gas-releasing compounds or poked the hot mass to form uniform rows of bubbles before sealing them inside a thick clear casing.
People placed these decorative fruits on desks and tables in homes and offices to hold down loose papers and add a touch of colour to the room. They were popular as souvenirs, gifts and mantelpiece ornaments throughout the twentieth century. Production of such decorative glassware eventually spread worldwide as techniques were adopted by glassworks in other countries.
