Roger Guerin (1856-1954) Belgian Art Deco Floor Vase Pitcher “Queen Bird” - Master Ceramist - Museum Worthy Piece - OOAK. Glazed & Incised Stoneware Floor Pitcher Vase Showpiece - 17” Tall
Signed & numbered on base Excellent condition Guérin's pottery is known for combining the region's traditional stoneware techniques with a modern aesthetic. Glazing: He mastered experimental salt-glaze techniques, resulting in unique and often flowing, iridescent, or drip-style finishes. Metallic, blue, and brown tones are common. Material: He worked with high-fired stoneware, known locally as grès sale grand feu, a hard ceramic produced in the Bouffioulx region since the Middle Ages. Forms: His pieces range from traditional, bulbous Art Nouveau vases to more streamlined, geometric Art Deco forms, as well as decorative items like pitchers and tiles. Collaborations: Guérin frequently collaborated with other artists, including sculptors and ironworkers, sometimes incorporating metalwork into his ceramic pieces. Workshop and history Guérin's pottery career was rooted in the revival of the Bouffioulx ceramics industry by his mentor, Willem Delsaux. Early career (1911–1918): After studying ceramics under Delsaux, Guérin worked at industrial potteries to hone his skills. Poterie Roger Guérin (1919): In 1919, he took over his mentor's workshop, establishing his own cooperative society. Commercial success (1920s–1940s): At the peak of his success, Guérin employed over 40 artisans. Despite the workshop's rationalized production, every piece was hand-turned, making each unique. He also taught art ceramics to the next generation of ceramists. International recognition (1925): Guérin gained international acclaim after winning a medal at the prestigious 1925 Paris Exposition des Arts Décoratifs. Legacy: Following his death in 1954, his work is now held in several museums and is highly sought after by collectors.
