Original Horace Taylor Watercolor Painting 1897 Catskills Waterfall Landscape
Original Horace Taylor Watercolor Painting 1897 Catskills Waterfall Landscape This is the American artist Horace Taylor (1864–1921), known for his work in 'The Verdict' and 'The Chicago Tribune,' not to be confused with the British poster artist of the same name. Horace Taylor (American, 1865–1921) was a prominent American illustrator and cartoonist during the "Golden Age" of American illustration. Based in Chicago and New York, he was a key artist for The Chicago Tribune, The Chicago Herald, and the political magazine The Verdict. While best known for his sharp political satire and character sketches, Taylor was a skilled landscape painter. This original 1897 (Aug17•97) watercolor captures the Catskill Mountains at the height of the region's popularity with the Hudson River School movement. His work is held in several permanent collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago. Measurements: Sight Size: 16” x 10” Frame Size: 19 2/8” x 13 2/8” NOTE: Condition • Overall: Good (considering age of 125+ years) • Medium: Original watercolor/gouache on paper. • Paper Condition: The paper exhibits significant toning (acid-burning) and has shifted to a warm tan/brown hue. This is a common result of long-term contact with its original 19th-century wood-pulp backing. There is mild cockling (wavy rippling) to the paper, which is characteristic of original watercolor application. • Surface: No visible tears, holes, or significant foxing (mold spots). Colors remain visible but have mellowed over time. • Verso (Back): The backing shows heavy staining and water-marking (see photos); however, this appears primarily on the exterior backing board and not the face of the art itself. • Frame: Housed in a period gilded "compo" frame. The frame shows surface wear, minor gilt loss, and spots consistent with its age. It is sold "as-found" to preserve its historical integrity. PLEASE REVIEW THE PICTURES CAREFULLY!!
