Antique American Brilliant Cut Glass Cheese Dome w/Underplate, Ozone Pattern
This antique American Brilliant Cut Glass Cheese Dome with Underplate is done in the Ozone Pattern, patented by David Walsh in 1900-05 while at the Union Glass Company in Somerville, Massachusetts. Each facet in the piece was cut by hand, at the height of the Brilliant period. The heavy crystal glass set has a sawtooth curved underplate with a matching dome that covered cheese (although it would also work well for a large portion of butter). The design features both hobstars (typically a 12-pointed star created by three overlapping sets of parallel cuts, often featuring a small "hobnail" or diamond-shaped, raised, or cut center) and buzz stars or pinwheels (a 12-point swirling star with fans that follow the direction of the points, designed to look like it is "whirling"). The set is substantial, weighing 3 pounds and 6 ounces. Cheese Dome - 5.25 inches high, 5.1 inches wide Underplate - 8 inches wide, 1 inch high The dome is in pristine condition. There are no chips, cracks or signs of wear. The underplate is in excellent condition, with no cracks. I have identified one flea bite on a point and one small chip on the underside of a sawtooth point. (Please see the close up pictures.) Given the age of the piece, this is quite remarkable. If you purchase more than one item, I am happy to combine shipping to save postage cost.
