#5005 Vintage porcelain bisque Kewpie-style baby figurine.
4.5” high. No chips and crack. Kewpie dolls were originally illustrated by Rose O'Neill in 1909 and became incredibly popular as bisque and celluloid dolls in the early 20th century. Their distinctive chubby appearance, round head, and mischievous smile have made them enduring icons of childhood and vintage collectibles. These dolls were produced by various manufacturers worldwide, with Germany and Japan being prominent origins for bisque versions. "Piano babies" is a term used for a type of porcelain figurine, typically depicting infants or toddlers in various playful poses, popular from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century. They were often placed on pianos or mantels. While not all piano babies are Kewpies, the style and material (porcelain or bisque) are similar, and many Kewpie-style figurines are categorized as piano babies by collectors.
