#4015 Vintage Japanese Kamakurabori carved wood hand mirror with floral motif.
Good condition 12” x 6”Kamakurabori is a traditional Japanese lacquerware technique that originated in Kamakura during the Muromachi period (1336-1573). It involves carving wood and then applying multiple layers of lacquer, often in red or black, to create a rich, textured finish. This technique is known for its durability and the deep, lustrous appearance of the lacquer, which can highlight the carved details.
Hand mirrors, known as 'tekagami,' have been used in Japan for centuries, evolving from practical grooming tools to decorative art objects. During the Meiji and Taisho periods (late 19th to early 20th century), and continuing into the mid-20th century, such mirrors often featured intricate carvings of natural motifs like flowers, birds, and landscapes, reflecting traditional Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship.
