#0227 Embossed cobalt blue glass bottle with grapevine motif.
No chips or cracks Cobalt blue glass has been used for centuries, with its vibrant hue derived from cobalt oxide. This color was particularly popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries for bottles, as it was believed to protect the contents from light and was also aesthetically pleasing. Many medicinal, pharmaceutical, and proprietary tonics were bottled in cobalt blue glass due to these perceived benefits and its distinctive appearance. Bottles with embossed designs, such as the grapevine motif seen here, were common during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. These embossed patterns served not only as decoration but also as a way to identify the product or manufacturer, and to prevent counterfeiting. The use of machine-made glass, indicated by the consistent form and detailing, places this bottle within the period of industrialization.
