#0073 An iridescent art glass paperweight with swirled design by Robert Eickholt 1982
Independent studio glass artists in the United States crafted pieces like this paperweight starting in the late twentieth century. They made them as decorative desktop accessories to showcase advanced glassblowing techniques and chemical iridescence. Craftsmen achieved the metallic sheen by introducing metallic oxides into the molten glass formula during creation.
People placed these glass spheres on wooden desks to hold down loose papers and letters. They used them in offices and studies where their reflective surfaces caught the light from nearby windows or lamps. This role shifted as digital documents replaced paper, turning such objects entirely into decorative display pieces.
